The "three stars and a sun" is the central symbol on the flag of the Philippines .

Sun:

Represents freedom, independence, and democracy.

Its eight rays symbolize the first eight provinces that revolted against Spanish colonial rule: Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna, and Batangas.

Three stars:
